Week One
Reading response:
- Respond to the following writing prompt: How does Kumashiro define 'commonsense?' Why is it so important to pay attention to the 'commonsense'?
Common sense is the aspect of different perspectives, people with different cultural backgrounds and education brought different perspectives and their idea of what commonsense was. We bring different assumptions, expectations, and values to the school system. Common sense limits what is considered to be consistent with the purposes of schooling. People who challenge our commonsense are often dismissed are irrelevant.
It is important to pay attention to commonsense because we may become set in our ways that become so second nature that we must be aware of the things we are doing so we do not become stuck in a way that we judge only others rather than ourselves. When our own common sense goes unquestioned, we being to oppress someone else’s common sense and allow ourselves to blanket our views and make them appear to be superior, although they may not be. Failure to critique our own assumptions, causes our assumptions to impact our commonsense. Our individual values can be oppressive, and we can marginalize others based on our intrinsic values. We often assume we are to keep our commonsensical views intact in order to unravel someone else's.
